The Green Door in Ella, founded by Sudantha Soysa, is a restaurant that combines local charm with culinary excellence. Drawing from his experience with The Green Door Café in Colombo, Sudantha used his design and project management expertise to create a dining space that blends seamlessly with Ella’s natural beauty. Built with locally sourced materials, the restaurant offers a spacious, open-air environment where guests enjoy fresh air and greenery. Our menu, crafted by one of Sri Lanka’s top chefs, provides a memorable gastronomic experience. Prioritising comfort, excellent service, and a relaxed atmosphere, The Green Door aims to offer a serene, inviting space for tourists worldwide while celebrating the cultural richness of the region.
Our Story
The Green Door’s story began with a family trip to Ella just before the pandemic, where founder Sudantha Soysa was captivated by the town’s peaceful charm. What started as a simple idea for a small café soon grew into a much larger vision. Sudantha found a location slightly off the beaten path with ample space and potential. Despite needing significant renovations, he transformed the 1,000-square-foot area into a 4,000-square-foot dining haven.
The Green Door is special for its refined aesthetic and commitment to exceptional service. We offer a unique, tranquil dining experience, far from the usual hustle and bustle. From cozy, English cottage-inspired restrooms to a meticulously maintained environment, we aim to provide a comforting escape. Our mission is to deliver unparalleled culinary excellence and service, making The Green Door a serene retreat for both locals and visitors.

In our second seasonal opening, we proudly welcomed an award-winning consultant chef, whose expertise has helped refine and elevate our menu. Our new manager, with extensive international experience, brings fresh insights and valuable skills to the team. We’re also pleased to have most of our previous season’s team return, ensuring continuity and a seamless dining experience.
